Michael D. Gall

Michael D. Gall, 84, of Elyria, died unexpectedly on Saturday January 21, 2023 at his home. Mike was born March 24, 1938 in Lorain and had resided in Lorain County most of his life. Mike attended Lorain High School and joined the US Army in 1955. He made the Army a career serving for over 21 years until his retirement in 1976. During that time, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, RVN Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He had personally made over 200 parachute jumps and had received the Master Parachute Badge. Mike also served as a Federal Agent toward the end of his military career. Upon his return from the military, Mike worked as a clerk with the post office for over 20 years until fully retiring. Mike was a life member of the following groups: VFW Post #451, AMVETS Post #47, American Legion #30, DAV Post #20, the Military Order of Cootie, the 11th Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he became a 4th degree Knight, ELKS Lodge #1301 and FOPA #46. He also was a member of St Teresa of Avila Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher. Mike enjoyed gardening, dancing, dining out and reminiscing about his time in the Army. Having left high school early to join the military, Mike was able to obtain his GED later in his life. He is survived by his daughters: Kimberly Mezlak of Avon Lake, Karen Terry (Danny) of Vermilion and Michelle Gall of Elyria; granddaughter Lauren Christie of Vermilion, great grandson Arlo Koachway and brothers: Leroy Gall (Adele) of Elyria and Lawrence Gall (Mary Lou) of North Ridgeville. He was preceded in death by his parents Michael J. & Helen Gall (nee Fedor), former wife Margaret M. “Peggy” Gall (nee Yerico); son-in-law Frank Mezlak, sister Judy Pritchett and brothers Dale & Allen Gall. The family will receive friends Thursday January 26, 2023 from 3:00-7:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where the Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard. Funeral services will be held Friday January 27, 2023 at 9:15 AM in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1878 Abbe Rd, Sheffield Village. The Rev Edward Smith, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where AMVETS Post #32 of Elyria will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions can be made to St Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.
