Velma E. Dennis

Velma Elizabeth Dennis (nee Uveges), 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 1, 2025 at The Woods on French Creek in Avon. Born on November 18, 1931, in Logan’s Ferry, PA Velma moved to Ohio in 1943 settling in Lorain with her parents and siblings. After graduating in 1949 from Clearview High School she married her high school sweetheart Richard Dennis on January 27, 1951, and began a wonderful life filled with love, laughter, ups and downs and a lot of fun. Her love of children was evident at Vincent Elementary School where she served as secretary for 20 years. Velma never passed up the chance to cuddle a baby or play with a little one. Velma was very proud of her Hungarian heritage passing down the love of Hungarian food and traditions to her children and grandchildren. She was a former member of the Hungarian Reformed Church UCC and later in life a member of the House of Praise International Church. Velma had many happy memories of wintering in Sarasota, Florida and exercising at the YMCA with her sister Rose. Having a wonderful sense of humor Velma loved a good joke, enjoyed reading, music, puzzles, cooking and baking. Velma instilled compassion and respect for animals in her children and loved watching the squirrels enjoy their peanut butter sandwiches and all the other wildlife that shared her beautiful, wooded yard. Always well fed and never turned away, a stray was always welcomed at her house and some never left. Velma is survived by her children Richard Joseph Dennis of Sheffield Township and Patricia Dennis of Mentor, sister Rosemarie Fischer (Lou), Daughter-in-law Susan Dennis, dear family friend Laura M. Jones, grandchildren: Richard A. Dennis (Shanna) and Tiffany A. Dennis and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Dennis; Son Alan “Bear” Dennis; parents: Frank and Helen Uveges (nee Kovach); brothers: Frank and John Uveges and sister Priscilla Dennis. To honor Velma’s memory please be forgiving and kind to one another and our furry friends. The family will receive friends Saturday March 15, 2025 from 9:00 am until the time of funeral services at Noon at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Private family burial will be held at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
