Michael W. Simonovich

Michael W. “Mike” Simonovich, 74, passed away on March 26, 2026 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington following a three-week illness. Mike was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio where he lived until 2008. The remaining portion of his life was spent surrounded by his son, daughter in law, and granddaughter in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Seattle, Washington. It was here where Mike was valued and admired as the #1 Resident Volunteer within his Assisted Living community. Mike graduated from Lorain High School in 1971. Following graduation, he attended Lorain County Community College before working for and retiring from Lake Terminal Railroad. At the age of nine, Mike sustained a life-threatening injury, followed by a grave prognosis. Mike was not prepared to give up. He chose to fight with the same degree of determination, grit, and tenacity he displayed throughout his life. As a freshman in high school, he was encouraged to consider cross-country. Mike began running before school, in upwards of 11 miles each morning. The rest is history. He lettered in cross-country for three years, reaching Varsity level. He was also a devoted football and wrestling manager. Following graduation, his love and self-imposed determination for long distance running continued to shine. He attended Lorain County Community College and joined the cross-country team, which resulted in frequent Lorain Journal articles outlining his track and field accomplishments from high school through college. In 1971 Mike was also featured with a two-page article in the Ohio Track & Field Newspaper. One of his proudest moments was an impressive two-mile run time of 10:38. Mike married and had three sons. His boys meant the world to him. Their favorite memories include camping, playing football with the neighborhood kids, hours of fun gaming at Aladdin’s Castle, and woodland hiking at French Creek Reservation. When his boys were asked to describe their dad they stated, “He cared more about others than he did about himself. He was selfless.” Mike leaves behind his sons Daniel of Lorain, Robert (Rebbecca) of New Franklin and Patrick (Anne) of Seattle. Grandchildren, Hope, Samuel, Isaac, Elizabeth and Michael and sisters Janet Simonovich-Nelson (golfing buddy John Nelson) of Rocky River and Mary Jo Farr (David) of Lakewood. He is preceded in death by his parents William and Mary Ellen (nee Flaherty) Simonovich, and siblings Don, BJ and Carol (Carroll). The family will receive friends Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St, Mary Catholic Church, 8th St & Reid Ave, Lorain at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026. The Reverend Daniel O. Divis, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.
